What SprintPCS doesn't let you know!
Issue: No phone in the house, and sometimes lose signal for no reason. Solutiuon; Go to your Menu, Go to Settings, Scroll down and select Phone Info, you may need to scroll down until you see a PLR# (it is usually the first line, it may not say PLR) copy that down, call SprintPCS and tell them that you may need to update your PLR, once they set you up, go to your phone, dial *2, talk, It will ask you 1 for english, after selection it will let you know that they need to do a update, it will be about one minute, once they say update was sucessful, hangup, then shutdown and turn back on. You should see some improvement. ( I told the Sprint Tech That they should put this info on your bill, as a reminder on what the current PLR is). Good Luck, Cal Buckley

Manage Network Bridge Settings Registery Tweak
Note: This Microsoft article provides further information on the Windows XP Network Bridging feature: http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/techinfo/administration/homenetbridge/default.asp
Here is a tweak to control the bridge, as the usual precaution in regard to working in the registery, backup and create a restore point when modifying your registery...Cal B
Here is the tweak:
Manage Network Bridge Feature (Windows XP)
Windows XP includes a new feature called Network Bridge, which lets you connect disparate media types into one seamless network. This tweak allows you to control forwarding and settings associated with this feature.
Open your registry and find the key below.
Create or modify the DWORD values from the table and set them to "1" to disable the feature, or "0" (default) to enable it.
• DisableForwarding - disable forwarding
• DisableSTA - disable spanning tree algorithm
Restart Windows for the change to take effect.
It should look like this
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BridgeMP]
Value Name: DisableForwarding, DisableSTA
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = default, 1 = disable features)

Knowledge Base setting up a router
How do I configure multiple Access Points to expand my wireless coverage?
Here are the basic steps for an Ethernet-based network that has a single router with a DHCP server:
Connect each access point (AP) to the Ethernet LAN. If any of the APs has a built-in DHCP server, disable it.
Assign each AP a static IP address in your LANs subnet. This will ensure that you always know where to reach them for admin purposes. Use IP addresses starting at the top of your network's range, so that your static IP's don't conflict with the addresses assigned by your router's DHCP server. For example, if your LANs computers have IP addresses 192.168.0.10, 192.168.0.11, etc. assign the access points' addresses as 192.168.0.254, 192.168.0.253, etc.
Set each AP to a different channel, using channels 1, 6 and 11. If you have the APs set to the same channel, they will interfere with each other, possibly causing worse performance. (If you have a lot of APs, you can alternatively use channels 1,4, 8 and 11... see this FAQ for more info.)
Assign the same SSID (also known as ESSID) to each AP.
If your are using WEP, enter the same WEP keys in each AP.

Access Point v.s. Router
If you are not clear what the router does more than the Access point, let's explain this below:
A Access Point (AP) just connects wireless systems together - like a wired
hub/switch - plus bridges between wired and wireless networks. Regards it as
a fancy piece of wiring used in building a local LAN.
If you buy a DSL modem then it will only work if connected directly to a PC
Or router, just like an analogue 56k modem. [Beware of single port routers
described as modems]
A router is needed to join your local LAN to the Internet. The rules of
TCP/IP says that a PC cannot talk to another PC unless it is on the same
network - shares the same address range.
e.g. a local LAN might have the address range 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.0.255.
Any device using that address range can talk to any other device in that
Range. However if you want to connect to 'www.microsoft.com' at address
207.46.249.190 you cannot connect to it directly because it is not within
Your address range. So you have to go via one or more routers.
A router has a minimum of two IP interfaces, one in each network it is
connected to. It does the job of moving your data onto another network to
which it belongs.
e.g. if you have two LANS 10.0.0.1 and 192.168.0.1 then the router will have
a connection to each and will pass data between the two LANs.
Remember that it doesn't matter if the PCs in different LANs share the same
physical cabling. The rules say that they are not allowed to talk to each
other unless they belong to the same address range (usually called network
or subnet).
To get to Microsoft your router would connect to your ISPs router which
would connect to another router....etc. The 'traceroute' or 'tracert'
command will show you the hops between routers.
So the setup with just an AP and a DSL modem should not work - you need
something to route between your wireless PC and your ISP. Most people do one
of two things:
(1) Buy a combined modem/router and connect it to their local LAN built from
wired switches and wireless APs
(2) Connect a PC to the DSL modem (via USB or network card #1), and also
connect this PC to the local LAN via network card #2. Then run Internet
Connection Sharing (ICS) which is routing software - it effectively turn
your PC into a router. This is less secure than (1) because your PC is
exposed to the Internet, not protected by a hardware router.
It is possible that if you have a cable modem with an Ethernet port which
makes your local strand of Ethernet part of the ISPs LAN then you can run
with a broadband modem, an AP and a single PC. you cannot do this with
DSL.
David W.E. Roberts (nospam@talk21.com)
So basically You can plug in a Access Point into 1 PC, have many wireless Pc’s, setup ICS, and File and Print Sharing. Not as secure way, however it can be done….Cal
